In
what is fast becoming a season of death in Nigeria, the last three weeks has
seen news of the demise of some prominent Nigerians, or their relatives.
More saddening to these deaths is
the fact that most of those whose demise have made the news in the last three
weeks were all relatively young people, between the ages of 35 and 60.
It is true that people die everyday
and all men are supposed to be equal in terms of birth and death, however, some
get in the news for a large scale of influence they had while alive.
In this wise, below are 5 prominent
Nigerians whose death have made the rounds in the last three weeks, we cannot
live forever, but sometimes we can only wish that we die at a ripe old age.
5. Aduragbemi
Banjo Late wife of popular juju singer Seancor Dare Nuga, she died in the early
hours of Sunday, June 12, 2016.
Seancor as the singer is fondly called was on a music tour
of the United States of America when he received the news of the death of his
darling wife, Aduragbemi Banjo who was in Nigeria. According to the stylish juju
singer, Aduragbemi was supposed to join him in the US on Friday June 24 but
sadly that is never going to be. The mother of two died in their Ipaja home.
4. Henrietta
Kosoko This Nollywood actresses was married to veteran actor and former
president of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) Jide
Kosoko.
The veteran actress was alleged to have died in the morning
of Monday, June 6 after she had slumped at home and was rushed to the hospital
where she was alleged confirmed dead. According to PorscheClassy Media, a close
family source who spoke under the condition of anonymity said: “She was in coma
and eventually gave up the ghost, she’s actually been battling diabetics for a
while now cause her sugar level keeps fluctuating” Henrietta Kosoko celebrated
her 53rd birthday a week to her death. Her burial service was held at the
Catholic Church, Lagos and interment followed at her hometown in Delta state.
3. Amodu
Shuaibu The NFF announced the death of its technical director, Amodu Shuaibu
via a series of Tweets on Saturday, June 11.
Sources revealed that the four-time coach of the Super
Eagles complained of chest pains on the night of June 10 and died in his sleep.
Before then, he drove himself in the afternoon to drop his friend with his car.
He was discovered dead about 4am this morning. The late Amodu has always
contributed his quota to the development of football in Nigeria. Under his
stewardship, Nigeria qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but Amodu
was sacked despite the team’s third-place finish at the 2010 Africa Cup of
Nations in Angola.
2. Stephen
Okechukwu Keshi (The Big Boss) Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, former coach of the
Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, died in the early hours of
Wednesday, June 8, in Benin City, Edo state.
The sudden demise of the former international was confirmed
by his relatives and close associates. “He was not ill at all, never showed any
signs of illness, but we suspect he never got over the death of his wife,” one
of his close friends said. The Nigeria Football Federation also confirmed the
tragic news on its official Twitter handle. According to Keshi’s family member,
Ricky Aburimen, the Super Eagle’s former coach complained of a leg ailment
while holidaying at his Aiprport road home in Benin. He said that Keshi was
rushed to Faith Hospital in the Benin Government Reservation Area, where he
died at about 3am.
1. OJB Jezreel
Babatunde Okungbowa aka OJB Jezreel reportedly died in the early hours of
Tuesday, June 14, at Isolo General Hospital in Lagos.
The news of his demise is coming just one month
to his 50th birthday as a family source claims that his kidney transplant
failed completely since last week. He was kept on daily dialysis before his
urgent need for oxygen yesterday. Recall that the producer was down with kidney
related disease, and was consequently flown to India for a transplant in 2013.
On October 21, same year, the singer successfully underwent the surgery at the
Indian hospital. After the successful surgery, the producer came out to thank
all his well-wishers, especially his first wife Mabel Okungbowa, popularly
called Mama J, who accompanied him on the trip and donated her kidney to him.
However, in 2015, the veteran Nigerian musician and producer was reported to
have suffered a setback in his recovery from the kidney transplant; but he came
forward to deny such reports.
